Penguin Has Arrived Again – Google Penguin 2.1

Google’s Matt Cutts announced late on Friday that Penguin 2.1 was launched, affecting roughly 1% of searches “to a noticeable degree.” This is the first official Penguin announcement we’ve seen since Google revealed its initial Penguin revamp, with 2.0 in May.
Penguin 2.0 was the biggest tweak to Penguin since the update initially launched in April of last year, which was why it was called 2.0 despite the update getting several refreshes in between.
Cutts said this about Penguin 2.0 back when it rolled out: “So this one is a little more comprehensive than Penguin 1.0, and we expect it to go a little bit deeper, and have a little bit more of an impact than the original version of Penguin.”
Penguin 2.0 was said to affect 2.3% of queries with previous data refreshes only impacting 0.1% and 0.3%. The initial Penguin update affected 3.1%. While this latest version (2.1) may not be as big as 2.0 or the original, the 1% of queries affected still represents a significantly larger query set than the other past minor refreshes.

Penguin, of course, is designed to attack webspam. Here’s what Google said about it in the initial launch:
The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can’t divulge specific signals because we don’t want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.
As you can see, Penguin is still part of Google’s Hummingbird algorithm.

Google Panda Updating With New Signals

Cutts said – “We’ve also been looking at Panda, and seeing if we can find some additional signals (and we think we’ve got some) to help refine things for the sites that are kind of in the border zone – in the gray area a little bit. And so if we can soften the effect a little bit for those sites that we believe have some additional signals of quality, then that will help sites that have previously been affected (to some degree) by Panda.”

Moz Comes Up with 2013 Search Ranking Factors Survey

Moz has released the 2013 search engine ranking factors survey, which involved surveying 120 SEO professionals. The 120 individuals ranked different search factors to come up with interesting information that should be considered while optimizing a website for search engines.


Moz used over 14,000 keywords from Google AdWords across a number of categories and then extracted top 50 organic search results, post Penguin update in June. Search correlations were used to make an estimate of what is being used for the ranking algorithm in Google. The correlation was also based on the features present on higher ranking sites versus the features in lower ranking websites.
An interesting correlation found was that despite professionals knowing that over optimizing a keyword anchor text can be problematic for the site and give a sign of spamming, the correlation for exact and partial match was fairly high. However, SEOs believed that a diversity in the anchor text (including branded and non-branded items) was far more important than number of links.
On looking at on page keywords, a high correlation was found in the body text, H1 tags, and meta-description. The survey revealed that including keywords in title and on page is important.
The survey also revealed that rankings of exact match domains have declined in the past year, but correlation is still high. A few years ago, it was extremely important to have the keywords in the domain but it is not being practiced now.
Moz also said that social signals and their correlation with ranking factors are essential. It is interesting to know that Google +1's are ahead of the Facebook shares and tweets for the correlation factors. The survey however doesn't feel that social signals are of too much importance to Google search algorithm.

Google posted an interesting Webmaster Help video today about linking. It’s basically about whether it’s better to link to an original source somewhere at the top of a post, or at the bottom. The answer is essentially that it makes no difference, as far as Google’s algorithm is concerned. The link will flow PageRank either way, so as fas as SEO is concerned, it really doesn’t matter.
After Cutts answers the question directly, he gets into his personal opinions and discusses what he finds annoying about linking practices.
“I’ll just say, for my personal preference, I really appreciate when there’s a link somewhere relatively close to the top of the article because I really kind of want to know when someone’s talking about it, you know, hey, go ahead and show me where I can read the original source or let me look up more information,” says Cutts. “There are a lot of blogs that will give one tiny little link all the way at the bottom of a big long story, and by that time, it just doesn’t seem like it’s quite as useful, but that’s just a personal preference. That’s not ranking advice as far as it goes.”
“The only other thing I hate – this is once again just personal – is whenever you’ve got a regular news report, whether it’s in a mainstream newspaper – New York Times, AP, whatever – and they say, ‘Blah Blah Blah said on a popular webmaster blog that blah blah blah,’ and they don’t link to the source,” he continues. “I mean, come on. Link to your sources, whether you’re a journalist, whether you’re a blogger, let people go and look at the original information themselves so that they can suss out what they think about whatever it is that you’re writing about. So if you just say, ‘Oh, it was discovered on a popular forum that blah blah blah,’ then we have to go look for it. That’s really annoying.”
“Again, not ranking advice,” he reiterates. “Just asking everybody to be considerate on the web, and share credit, and attribute, so that people can, you know, does the research for them if they want to.”
